new officers acknowledge the tremendous work and effort put in by the outgoing
committee led by angling tour operator Alan Broderick. Speaking at the announcement,
Ian Forde, General Secretary, added : "The
IPS will continue the good work of our predecessors. We will vigorously represent
the views of our members and of our overseas affiliates with the aim of securing
a new deal for pike angling in a country whose angling authorities preserve their
"game" bias to the detriment of our pike stocks." The
IPS represents pike anglers from all over Ireland, North and South, and have many
overseas members. On the recent announcement of a root and branch review of pike
angling by the Central Fisheries Board, David Overy, Chairman, said :
"We welcome the official review and will work
constructively to aid its objectives. However pike anglers should remain wary.
It is the Official Duplicity of our Fisheries Boards towards the species which
is behind the inexorable decline in pike angling over recent years. Lack of enforcement
of pike protection bye laws, the spending of virtually all fishery board resources
on trout and salmon, and ongoing wasteful pike culling is the legacy of this duplicity." Overy
added : "It is tragic
that, having announced a review and encouraged hundreds of submissions from home
and abroad, no moratorium on pike culling has been called. The CFB could have
regained much trust by this simple gesture." Pike
culling continues this Spring, on a host of loughs covering three Regional Boards
in Leinster and Connaught / Ulster. |
