16th 2002 The
byelaw proposal seeking to outlaw the use of live and dead freshwater fish and
eels in 14 named lakes in Cumbria has now been passed on to the Deparment for
Environment, Food & Rural Affairs. The National Anglers' Alliance (NAA - the
representative body for all anglers in this country) has written to the Countryside
Minister, Elliot Morley, summarising anglers' objections to these proposals and
stressing the depth of our opposition to them. The backing of the NAA not only
carries much greater weight than a PAC submission in isolation, but also maximises
our voice, and of course we fully support the content of their submission. There is a new PAC region in the Loughborough area. Colin Telfer is the Regional Organiser and he can be contacted at toad.soarvalley.pac@ntlworld.com or julie.toad@ntlworld.com or by telephone on (01509) 558823. This
is a small but growing region, with a lot of events and teach-in planned for the
up and coming season. Young, novice or non PAC pike angler within the region (or
outside it for that matter), are all welcome. Having amassed 10,000 hits in its first twelve months in this new format this website has achieved something of a landmark! We are pleased that people are finding it useful as a source of pike fishing information. Pikers from around the UK, and as far afield as Bosnia, have been in contact to tell us how useful the site has been to them. Hampshire based coarse fishing club Eastleigh & District A.C. now have a link from their site to this one as their recommended source of piking advice - and we can recommend their informative site to anyone interested in fishing in the Eastleigh area. The
latest development is the start of the Article
Archive, which will feature articles that have appeared in Pikelines
over the years. The first article is on-line now, and more will be added over
the coming months. There
is a new PAC promotional poster for ROs. Copies available from the usual PAC source!
Have a look here. The Environment Agency have confirmed that 526 objections had been received to their proposal to ban livebaiting and deadbaiting in the Lake District with the following waters affected: Windermere, Coniston, Wastwater, Ennerdale Water, Crummock Water, Buttermere, Loweswater, Bassenthwaite, Derwentwater, Brotherswater, Ullswater, Red Tarn, Haweswater and Thirlmere. The proposal is to protect these waters (14 of them containing rare indigenous species; vendace, arctic char and schelly) from disease and the competition from discarded live fish. But many pike anglers have raised objections to the proposal because they fear that this could be the thin end of the wedge, leading to similar bans on other 'sensitive' fisheries and ultimately a nationwide ban. The Environment Agency have also added that of the responses received, 482 were the standard PAC letter opposing the byelaw, there were 44 other individual letters also objecting to the proposed changes, and 6 letters of support. Public consultation has closed and a final decision will be taken by DEFRA later this year. PAC has made further representation to ensure that the 482 objections using the standard letters which appeared on this website will not be counted as one response, but as 482 individual responses. We
would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who made a response objecting
to this byelaw proposal. |
